Thermapply, the UK’s leader in engineered anti-slip surface systems, has successfully completed a major project to enhance both safety and aesthetics at Barclays Hampden, Scotland’s national stadium and one of the most iconic venues in world football and live events.
The project saw the installation of the firm’s revolutionary patented anti-slip stadium stairs system, Thermagrip, on hundreds of steps across key, central stadium staircases in an area that serves as primary access routes for thousands of supporters and is particularly prominent during televised sporting events and national occasions.
Designed to combine elite-level safety with architectural sensitivity, the installation was delivered within a tightly managed programme to minimise disruption to fixtures and events. Each step was precision-engineered to suit the existing structural dimensions, ensuring a seamless fit and consistent finish across the entire staircase.
Using Thermagrip’s proprietary thermoplastic composite surface bonded to aluminium sub-bases, the result delivers superior grip, durability, and long-term performance in both wet and dry conditions. This upgrade not only meets but exceeds DDA, HSE, and BS EN safety standards, reinforcing Barclays Hampden’s commitment to accessibility, inclusion, and world-class venue management.
Mike King, Joint Managing Director at Thermapply, commented, “Barclays Hampden is a symbol of Scottish sport and national pride. To be entrusted with upgrading such a prominent and heavily used area of the stadium is a privilege. This installation demonstrates how safety can be elevated while also enhancing design. By fitting hundreds of new Thermagrip steps to key central staircases, we’ve helped create an environment that is as secure as it is visually impressive, ready to perform under the scrutiny of both supporters and television cameras alike.”
Client and the Project Manager for the Scottish FA, Garry Blackadder added, “Enhancing the steps with the Thermagrip system has allowed us to significantly improve safety and accessibility for our visitors while maintaining the look and feel befitting Scotland’s national stadium. The result is a durable, high-performance solution that supports our ongoing commitment to providing a safe environment for everyone who comes to Barclays Hampden”.
The Thermagrip installation at Barclays Hampden further strengthens Thermapply’s reputation as a trusted partner to major UK sporting venues. Tested to endure over a million footfalls and engineered for resilience in all weather conditions, the system is tailored to reflect the identity and operational demands of every space it protects.
From playgrounds to premier stadiums, Thermapply’s mission remains the same: to design surfaces that protect people, preserve reputations, and perform beautifully for years to come.
